Acting Commissioner James McCall Announces Arrests

Acting Police Commissioner James McCall today, August 12, 2005, announced the arrests of Mr. Juan Sanchez and Tawana Spencer on warrants issued by the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix Division.

Juan Sanchez

Mr. Juan Sanchez, a 35 years-old male resident of Queen Street Frederiksted, St. Croix was arrested and charged with Grand Larceny and Possession of Stolen Property.

Mr. Sanchez is alleged to have stolen laptop computers belonging to the Virgin Islands Department of Education, while working in the capacity of an alarm installer at Central High School on or about July 11, 2005. Mr. Sanchez’s bail was set at $25,000.00 by the Honorable Superior Court Judge Daryl Donahue, unable to post bail; he was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility.

Acting Commissioner McCall further stated that during the month of July a number of computers were stolen from Central High School and Ricardo Richards Elementary School, and advises the public that if anyone is found to in possession of any of the stolen computers faces arrest for ‘Possession of Stolen Property’, which carries a jail sentence of 10 years and a fine up to $5,000.00. Additionally, he would like to extend his gratitude to the Police Detectives who work very diligently to resolve this matter and return the laptop computer to the Principal of Central High School.

Tawana Spencer

Ms. Tawana Spencer, a 26 year-old female resident of Bethlehem Village, St. Croix was arrested and charged with Grand Larceny, Simple Assault & Battery, Destruction to Property, Unlawful Entry, Aggravated Assault and Battery. Ms. Spencer’s bail was set at $25,000.00 by the Honorable Superior Court Judge Daryl Donahue; she was released on her own recognizance due to her present physical condition.

Ms. Spencer is alleged to have broken into a residence in Estate Williams Delight on several occasions during June and July of 2005, assaulting the victim by punching her about the face and body numerous times causing injuries; taking personal property and money; destroying clothing and furniture in the victim’s residence.

Additionally, she is alleged to have been involved in an attempt to run over a male victim on or about August 2, 2005 in Estate Williams Delight. The victim in this incident indicated that he was walking out of his yard when a pick-up truck drove at him at a high rate of speed causing him to jump backward to avoid being hit.

Police Detectives are continuing to investigate these incidents to locate the computers and we are requesting the assistance of anyone who may have knowledge or information related to these incidents to come forward with that information.
