VIPD Responds to Fatal Car Crash on St. Thomas’ East End

September 09, 2019

ST. THOMAS – On Sunday, September 8, 2019, at approximately 11:22 p.m., Virgin Islands Police officers in the Traffic Bureau and Forensic Units responded to a 911 Emergency Call Center notification of a car crash on Brookman Road, east of the laundromat area on St. Thomas’ east end.

Deputy Chief of Police David Cannonier arrived on the scene along with other members of the VIPD and observed a late model Mitsubishi Montero flipped on its roof with an occupant pinned inside.

The pinned individual was pronounced dead on the scene.

He was a 24-year-old black male of Haitian decent whose identity is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control while trying to negotiate a deep corner turn on Brookman Road. The victim was a passenger in the vehicle along with two other occupants. Police later discovered the other two occupants.

One of the occupants walked to a house in the Nadir area and the other occupant traveled to the hospital seeking treatment. Their injuries were not life threatening.

Deputy Chief of Police Cannonier responded to the incident with these words: “It is important that we obey all traffic laws, especially when it comes to our speed limits. We need the community to come forward and assist us in avoiding and solving such incidents.”

Officers of the Traffic Bureau are currently investigating this incident and asking anyone that may have seen or have any knowledge of this incident to please contact the Virgin Islands Police Department. Anyone needing to speak to the department confidentially can contact the Virgin Islands Police Department at (340)774-2211 ext. 5617, Major Crime Unit at (340)714-9830 or the Criminal Investigation Bureau (340)714-9807.
