Wanted Suspect Isaac Austrie Captured
September 23, 2011
VI Most Wanted suspect Isaac Austrie was captured by Virgin Islands police Special Response Team (SRT) at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, September 23 in Estate Smith Bay. Police have been seeking Austrie in connection with the First Degree Murder of 38-year-old Mao Penha which occurred on Sunday, August 7 in the Hospital Ground area.
The ongoing police investigation revealed that Austrie was located in an apartment in Estate Smith Bay and investigators obtained a search and arrest warrant. Upon gaining entry to the building specially trained SRT officers were fired upon by Austrie. Officers returned fire striking Austrie at least once. No police officers or citizens were injured during the exchange of gunfire. Austrie was taken to the Roy Lester Schneider Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives and Internal Affairs agents are conducting separate investigations into the incident. A wanted poster was issued on Austrie on September 12 and attempts were made through the media to persuade Austrie to turn himself into police, however, he did not.
Acting Police Commissioner Raymond L. Hyndman, who was in his St. Croix office Friday, was constantly updated throughout the day by detectives of the ongoing investigation, search and arrest of Austrie.
Hyndman said the recent capture of wanted suspects Kamoui Francis, Carlton Creque Jr. and now Isaac Austrie stands as an example to other criminals who attempt to evade arrest. “We have made it clear, we will continue to pursue you until you are in custody,” the acting commissioner said.
St. Thomas/St. John Police Chief Rodney F. Querrard Sr., congratulated the officers involved in the apprehension for their unrelenting pursuit of the suspect. He said “The officers knew Austrie was armed and dangerous. They used their training to apprehend the suspect without endangering their lives or the lives of residents in the area.”
