Our Purpose

The Firearms Bureau serves the residents and visitors of the Virgin Island by registering firearms and issuing firearm license. The agency regulates the possession of firearms. It records all firearm registrations in the Virgin Islands so lost and/or stolen firearms once recovered can be identified and returned to owners. In addition, the Bureau provides manages firearm related matters to include the transfer of ownership and safety training.

Qualifications of applicant

Persons who may lawfully carry a firearm

Persons ineligible to possess or carry a firearm

Documents needed:

  • Completion of application.
  • Completion of firearm safety course by a local certified range instructor; exception for military personnel with DD 214 form.
  • Background check with fingerprints collected.
  • Local business license for applicants applying for business protection.

Firearms License Renewal

Firearm(s) licenses must be renewed every three years on your birthday. You must come in a month before your license is to be expired.

Use of Firearms

The Firearms Unit reminds license holder they are restricted to using their firearms license(s) ONLY for the purpose stated on the license. Failure to do so will result in your license(s) being revoked and your firearm(s) confiscated.

Securing your Firearms

Having a firearm is a great responsibility we are asking that you practice proper firearms safety. We also ask that you secure your firearm(s) in a safe that is bolted in place. As stated in the VI Code failure to properly store your firearm(s)and allowing it to get into the wrong hands may lead to arrest and/or conviction, punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment, and you may be subject to forfeiture of your firearm(s) and license.

Firearms into the Virgin Islands

All firearms must be declared before travel. Upon arrival, all passengers who traveled with a firearm(s) should immediately go to the substation located in the baggage claim area.

The substation is open 7 days a week for processing firearms coming and leaving the Territory.
